Status of This Memo This memo provides information for the Internet community. It does not specify an Internet standard of any kind. Distribution of this memo is unlimited. Abstract This document provides recommendations for jittering (randomly modifying timing) of control traffic transmissions in Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET) routing protocols to reduce the probability of transmission collisions.

Jittering Broadcast Transmissions in MANETs: Quantification and Implementation Strategies

Delaying the transmission time of messages for a short random period, a.k.a. jittering, is a known approach for preventing concurrent transmissions, and consequently collisions, in multiple access networks (e.g., RFC 5148). It is particularly useful for increasing the reliability of unacknowledged broadcast messages in the 802.11 protocol. Yet, transmission jittering comes with a price. It incr...

Isochronous applications do not require jitter-controlled networks

An oft-stated goal of many of the ongoing gigabit networking research projects is to make it possible to support high bandwidth isochronous applications. An isochronous application is an application which must generate or process regular amounts of data at fixed intervals. Examples of such applications include telephones, which send and receive voice samples at regular intervals, and fixed rate...

Modeling of Jitter Characteristics for the Second Order Bang-Bang CDR

Bang-Bang clock and data recovery (BBCDR) circuits are hard nonlinear systems due to the nonlinearity introduced by the binary phase detector (BPD). The specification of the CDR frequency response is determined by jitter tolerance and jitter transfer. In this paper, jitter transfer and jitter tolerance of the second-order BBCDR are characterized by formulating the time domain waveforms. As a re...

Expedited Forwarding End to End Delay Jitter in the Differentiated Services Networks

An end to end (e2e) packet delay jitter has a negative impact on the offered QoS in IP networks. Therefore, in this paper we clarify this passive impact, and discuss the delay jitter that is based on the analysis done in [1]. However, here we focus on the expedited forwarding (EF) class in the differentiated services network (DiffServ). EF flows are represented by renewal periodic ON-OFF flows,...
